    Welcomed everyone  back to school; Introduction of Executive Board; and a reminder to all committee chairs that all flyers sent out in backpacks must FIRST be approved by Betty Johnson.
  • Treasurer’s Report – Colleen Steele
  • Checking Account Balance = $ 52,663.11, Petty Cash Balance = $107.00
    Fashion Show and 5K Run are not a part of potential fund raising for this school year.  Approximately $34, 517.00 is left over from last year.

  • Class Parents – Cynthia Ludwig
    Completed, however Mrs. Evan’s still needs 1 more parent to volunteer.  If none do, Annie Hausmann will volunteer.
  • Eyes on Art – Kristin Kline
    Explained program to new parents. This year the featured artists will be Degas; Picasso; Ringgold; and Homer.
    Alicia Johnson needs help with the 4th and 5th grade program.
  • KPSC (Korean Parent Support Committee) – Kumwhah Kim
    Explanation that the purpose of the group is to educate others of Korean Culture
    The group meets the first Friday of each month, and all are welcome
    This week will be they will celebrate Korean Thanksgiving
  •  Walk- a- Thon – Carol Mucciolo
    The Kickoff Assembly will be October 2nd, the event will be held October 19th, with a rain date of October 22nd.  More volunteers are needed
    Last year’s event earned $10, 592, we need full participation this year
  • Winter Wonderland – Tara Conmy and Margaret Ross
    Information will be presented next meeting
  • Enrichment – Pam Abramowitz and Tara Conmy
    Aside from Bomb Scare Session I commencement was successful
    There are still available spots for Session II

V.  OLD BUSINESS
A.  Playground Committee - Wendy Bajakian

  • Introduced Annie Hausmann, Lizz Giampaglia, Colleen Steele, Tara Conmy, and Claire McDermott as committee members.
  • Presented turnkey removal and installation outline
  • Acknowledged that Game time is the chosen company.
  • Reminded all of Lemonade stand fundraiser for upcoming weekend during Soccer Saturday (with Sue Sullivan’s Recreation Committee approval)
  • Kristin Kline offered to contact all coaches and players to donate toward Playground Fund.
  • Annie Hausmann presents Financial Schedule as follows:  $43, 765 collected to date; $20K is still needed to pay for the new playground and the installation thereof.  PTO would prefer not to deplete their account; therefore we would like to raise the balance via donations and fundraising events.
  • 8th Grade donating 10K for Basketball courts and path. 

B. CAP Program & Escape School– Wendy Bajakian

  • Has been in contact with Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.  Needs to know what grades will be addressed.  To be discussed with Betty Johnson.

C. Female Aggression – Carol Mucciolo

  • Rachel Weiss is willing to provide NPS with Two (1) hour classes for 4th & 5th grade girls and 6th & 7th grade girls; plus one evening speaking engagement for parents.  We have budgeted $5K from last year with the thought of sharing the expenses with another school district.  That option is no longer available; therefore we need another $3K to book Ms. Weiss.

D. White Board request from Mrs. Evans in the amount of $500.00.  Carol Mucciolo makes motion to approve, Colleen Steels seconds that motion.  All in favor, none opposed, motion carries.

VI.       NEW BUSINESS
  •  NJS Wellness Program State Law. 
    • No sugar filled foods are permitted in school. Therefore the Valentine’s Day candy kisses and Holiday Candy Cane products are to be removed or replaced. 
    • Carole Giannakas, Andrea Maline, and Cynthia Kroning to come up with new ideas for next meeting.
  • Mrs. Johnson withdraws request for teacher workshop material costs.
  • Carol Mucciolo introduces Red Cygnet Press as 1st Time Author’s program for new fundraising opportunity.  This may also benefit Author Day.  Lizz Giampaglia makes motion to approve, Pam Abramowitz seconds, all in favor, none opposed, motion carries.
  • 8th Grade Savings Bond $100 Award Program
  • Annie Hausmann believes that we should do away with the savings bond tradition and give $100 in cash to the award winner.  Colleen Steele makes motion to approve, Robert Solomon seconds the motion, all in favor, none opposed, and motion carries.
  • 20% Profit Sharing Fundraising event to be held by:  Blue Tulip in Closter in Books & Greetings in Northvale.  Pam Abramowitz makes motion to approve, Carol Mucciolo seconds, all in favor, none opposed motion carries.
  • Norwood 5K Run committee is requesting a donation from the Norwood PTO.  Last year the 5K Run committee donated all of their profits to the Norwood PTO.  Alyssa Bloom makes motion to approve $250.00 donation, Garen Sass seconds the motion, all in favor, none opposed, motion carries.
  • 8th Grade Lunch Committee involved with PTO together.  Currently an outline is being worked on to streamline family orders. 
    • 8th grade committee requests 1 yearly fundraising event to profit share with PTO.  Each year the graduating class gives the school a gift in the amount of $2K.  Pam Abramowitz makes motion to approve, Alyssa Bloom seconds the motion, all in favor, none opposed, motion carries to approve a yearly profit sharing fundraiser.
  • Playground Approval Vote
    • Lizz Giampaglia makes motion to approve the playground and any shortfalls will be covered by the PTO’s surplus fund, Garen Sass seconds the motion, all in favor, none opposed, motion carries.

      All Chairs need to send their backpack flyers to Chona for website posting (Chonafree@optonline.net).
    • KPSC (Korean Parent Support Committee) – Kumwhah Kim
      40 parents attended last meeting (great turnout).
      Each grade now has a KPSC Representative.
      Bi Monthly Committee meetings will now be scheduled; however grade Reps will have a monthly meeting.
    • Walk- a- Thon – Carol Mucciolo
      On schedule for October 19th, with a rain date of October 22nd.
    • Directory – Alicia Johnson
      Due to arrive week of 22nd.

    Thanked and congratulated Playground Committee, Children of the School are very excited about the new playground.
    Reminder to email all flyers to Chona for website posting.  The ultimate goal is to have a paperless system by spring of 2008.
  • Treasurer’s Report –Lizz Giampaglia reported:
    Checking Account Balance = $ 43,053.39. 
    Looking into an interest bearing business money market account.  Checking into activity limitations and balance requirements.
    Major expenses have all been paid out i.e. Enrichment Program and Playground mostly.

    Sympathy card for Mrs. Alberti’s Father’s passing.

    Very excited that the children of the School are excited about the Playground.  Great job by all.

III.       COMMITTEE REPORTS

  • Holiday Boutique –Annie Hausmann
    Will run from December 4th -6th.  December 3rd will be the set up and December 6th will be the take down.  Need volunteers.
  • Cultural Arts –Annie Hausmann
    Lenni Lenape Program scheduled for December 17th .  It is a 4th grade curriculum based program that contains a slide presentation, stories, and touchable objects/artifacts.
  • Walkathon – Carol Mucciolo
    Pledges for this year were $19,963.50 and participation was less than last year.
    Last year pledges were $21,301.00, 84% of those pledges were collected; less expenses, totaling $10,592.57 income.
    Thank you letters for pledge money were sent out last week.
  • Grandparent’s Day – Carol Mucciolo
    Flyers went out this week; it was suggested we only need 1 bus this year vs. 2 buses last year.  Pam Abramowitz makes motion to approve; Lizz Giampaglia 2nds; vote taken, all in favor, none opposed, motion approved.
    Need Coffee from Old Tappan Starbucks – Lizz Giampaglia to make request.
  • Red Cygnet Press – Carol Mucciolo
    Flyer to go out this month.  Need to put on the Website ASAP.
  • Directory Update – Alicia Johnson
    Done!  Revenue was $8,825.00.  Expenses were $3,300.00.  Profit was $5,525.00.  Additional copies are for sale for $5.00.  Send money to Colleen Steele. Out of respect for people’s privacy Directories are for School Families Only.
  • Spirit Wear – Kim Sklow
    Orders are in.  135 items sold.  Profit was $918.00.  Volunteers needed for distributing.
  • Membership – Annie Hausmann

  • Enrichment – Pam Abramowitz
    December 10th is Registration.  Session II begins January 15, 2008.  Kids are responding very well to the program.
    Lizz Giampaglia, Clare McDermott, Wendy Ward, and Alicia Johnson volunteer to help with Session II Registration.

    Received $109.00 from Greetings and More Bookstore
    Blue Tulip Day is coming up; all are encouraged to go and purchase their holiday gifts there.

    Store has offered to give the Norwood PTO 10% of the sales for 1 day of Norwood business.  Wendy Ward makes motion to approve, Kim Sklow 2nds motion; vote taken, all in favor, none opposed, motion is approved.
  • Past & Present Fundraiser– Jill Wien
    Has opened a Consignment and New Gifts Store.  Offers 15% profit fundraiser opportunity.  Proposed date of December 13, 2007.  Kim Sklow makes motion to approve, Carol Mucciolo 2nds motion; vote taken, all in favor, none opposed, motion approved.
  • 8th Grade Lunch - Annie Hausmann reported:
    Starting in January you will be able to order lunches on the regular form but with one check.  Working on Online Ordering system by March 2008.
    Thanks to Chona Freedman for all of her Website help on this as well.
  • Winter Wonderland Dance –Annie Hausmann reported:
    The event will take place on January 19, 2008; from 8 pm – 12 am at Westy’s Storage Facility.  Pricing to be finalized, however, trying to keep it $40 pp and $75 per couple like last year.  Update to follow. Caterer will be Steamboat Caterer’s (Northvale).  Meeting with them on November 15.  DJ will be Hollywood Entertainment (same as last year).

  • Current amount approved for Grades K, 3, and 7 is $1,423.  To Add 2 more Grades total requested is $999.00.  This could be toward Grades 2 & 6 (6th having a focus on Bullying).
  • A collective suggestion that grades K, 1, 3, 5, & 7th receive the program.

C.  Paver Fundraiser – Lizz Giampaglia

  • Sharing with the 8th Grade Committee in an effort to help them go to Washington D.C for this year’s class trip.  Flyers went out last week.  A 6’ x 9’ Paver costs $100.00 and a 12’ x 12’ Paver costs $250.00.  Orders are already coming in.  So far day three (3) of sales totals $1,350.

II.       EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE REPORTS

  • Treasurer’s Report – Colleen Steele
  • Opened business money market account currently paying 4.45% interest with $50,000.00 from checking account.  Plans are to keep this balance generating interest while using revenue generated by current and ongoing efforts to cover expenses throughout the year.  Will transfer money to checking account on an as-needed basis.

  • The ending is near for the new wing construction project.  Expected to be completed by early March.  Next week is the Annual Testing Report to be available on the website.  We are above the regional average in Math and in Science.  We are at a slightly below average in language, however 5% improved from last year.  Recycling issues have been reported and we are currently looking for a new carting vendor to collect our recyclables.  But until then NPW has offered to take our recycling via our own delivery thereof.

III.       COMMITTEE REPORTS

  • Enrichment – Stacey Klein
  • Everything is going very smoothly, good enrollment, three classes were cancelled; there are five classes per day.  $4,552 – last session, Winter Session collection expected in March.
  • Will be taking over the program from Pam Abramowitz.  All ideas are welcomed.  Looking forward to doing it again.
  • Cultural Arts – Hannah McLaughlin
  • Lenni Lenape Program went successfully. 
  • Break of Reality program was fantastic and well received.
  • January 17th will be the history of technology.
  • Mark Gussman from Closter, NJ who is the Nature Reserve Supervisor, will be doing a rope-making project, date TBD.
  • May 29th 4th Grade NJ Show (History of NJ, etc.)
  • In conjunction with the KPSC on February 8th Lunar Day Tradition in Korean Culture with dance, costumes, and drumming will be presented.
  • Holiday Boutique – by Annie Hausmann
  • $1,300.00 over cost was collected for the boutique event.
  • Walkathon – Carol Mucciolo
  • Total was $9,498.55 in total, however March will be the closeout
  • First was $6,758.37 and Second was $2,720.18
  • Two $50 Gift Certificates went out for the Raffle Prizes via Checks.
  • Collections were better this year vs. last year.
  • Grandparents Day – Carol Mucciolo
  • Next Year to be Carol’s Last Year.  Lizz Giampaglia Volunteered to take over.  Carol and Lizz to work next year’s event together for handoff.
  • 8th Grade Lunch – Chona Freedman
  • New Program to start in May for new 8th Grade committee coming in.
  • Next Year 200-2009 will be Chona’s last year.  She needs a new person to transition over to and also needs to establish a cyclical transition person every 2 yrs.  This person should be coming out of the 6th grade parent group.
  • Pam Abramowitz volunteers for the next 2 yr website post.
  • Joanne D’Ercole to be contacted for info on actual food information.
  • May/June Goal is for online ordering of lunches.
  • Chona Freedman, Wendy Ward, Eva Cohen, Carol Mucciolo, and Cynthia Kroening will be on the new 8th Grade Committee and will have a meeting.
  • Winter Wonderland Dance – Annie Hausmann reported:
  • Approximately 98 people are going; 115 is the limit for safety regulations.
  • Talent Show – Cynthia Kroning
    • Flyer went out this week.  Event will be held April 11, 2008 at 7 p.m.
    • An idea to contact a local flower store and sell flowers outside for additional fund raising
  • Pavers – Lizz Giampaglia
  • Currently have orders in the amount of $8,100.00.  Getting ready to hand off orders to Benaquista for engraving.  Installation scheduled for late March.
  • Movie Night – Samantha Fruhling
  • Big Fat Lair scheduled for March 14, 2008 and a Snow date of March 2, 2008 both are Friday Nights.  There will be two shows:  4-6 pm for grades k-2 and 7-9 pm for grades 3-5.  Tickets will costs $5.00 and Pizza will cost $2.00; which includes Water and/or Apple Juice.  Also looking into Popcorn Vendor.  Pre-Sale Flyer to go out soon.
  • Need to invite Holy Family Students.
  • Author Day – Samantha Fruhling
  • Daniel Kirk (K-2) scheduled for May 15th = $1,200.00
  • Dan Guttman (3-5) scheduled for May 23rd
  • Joyce McDonald (6-8) scheduled for April 7th
  • Eyes on Art – Samantha Fruhling
  • Van Gogh (4-5) went very well, the children loved it.  The only complaint was that 20 minutes per class was not enough time.
  • Matisse scheduled for February 1st and 4th for 30 minutes
  • Wyeth scheduled for April 14th and 15th  for 30 minutes
  • New Wing – Annie Hausmann
  • Open House for Community scheduled for March 1st; PTO Participation is needed.  Pam Abramowitz made a motion to approve; Cynthia Kroning 2nds the motion, all in favor, none opposed, motion approved.
  • May be a great opportunity to sell Cookbooks, Pavers, and Movie Night Tickets.

V.  OLD BUSINESS

  • CAP Program – Wendy Bajakian
  • Escape School will be April 8th at 7pm.  More details to follow.

B.  Odd Girl Out - Mrs. Cicchetii and Mrs. Shedletsky

  • Decision was made to do this year, end of March/April.  Evening program to be offered to all parents.  Carol Mucciolo makes motion to approve, Cynthia Kroning seconds motion, all in favor, none opposed, motion is approved.

VI.       NEW BUSINESS

  •  Greg Chertok – Sport Psychology Consultant/Marketing Coordinator -
  • February for grades (5-8) two different periods.

Dr. Rose thanks Annie.  3 Candidates for 3 BOE positions – Dave Hausmann, Michael Sprage and Kay Kim.  New website up by next week.  New policy info.  Will be sent home next week.  Board approved new safety policy for dismissal.  A flyer will be sent home regarding 3/8 ribbon cutting ceremony and tour of new addition featuring Dr. David Cohen and mayor.  Holy Thursday will be a regular day of school to make up for day lost due to the bomb scare.  Child who confessed to threat is being prosecuted by police dept. on behalf of borough.

  • Committee Reports
    • KPSC – Kumwah Kim – Korean Culture Day 2/27/08.  Fan Dance, showed DVD.  Class wrote thank you note to PTO.  Many sponsors – Korean Culture Embassy gave donation.  Tae Kwon Do master attended.  Well received.

    • Waiting to hear back from author.  $7500.  Author looking for hotel room and rental car.  Unnecessary.  Trying to work it out.  Date set for April 14th if we can reach agreement.
    • Website/Lunch Program – Chona Freedman – Slated to start test run for May/June.  Trial 30 parents.  Goal is to not send out flyers anymore.  Hopeful to put things in full swing by September.

    • School Supply Kits – Colleen Steele  Extended to K – 8th graders.  Need more volunteers.

 

  • OLD BUSINESS
    • Greg Chertock -  Gave talk on how to deal with stress.  Young, enthusiastic and FREE.  Would like to set up presentation for parents.  In the works.  Taught positive visualization and to think before you act.

 

  • NEW BUSINESS
    • NVOT Project Graduation request of $500.  PTO gives $500 for project graduation plus 2 $500 scholarships .  Total $1500.

 

    • Wish List from Teachers – Annie spoke to Barbara Migdalen and to Pat Evans.  Barabara Migdalen gave list.  One request is for Social Studies lab for 7th and 8th grade classrooms.  Would entail 16 IMACS for $20,544.  Also projectors needed for Kindergarten classrooms which would cost $1058.  Will decide at next meeting.
    • Annie requests volunteers to help clean out storage locker.

      • School Budget passed by 45 votes.  Challengers are needed for next year.  Not enough publicity made for the vote only 345 people voted.
      • Robert Solomon makes a suggestion to have class parents assist in promoting and advertising the budge vote.

      • 99% completed for website deployment.  Offered to do PTO Membership online as well (May 15th flyer to go out regarding membership).  Postcards will be sent out in September to remind and announce the Website availability.  Will discuss Head Class Parent involvement with Cindy Ludwig
Talent Show – Cynthia Kroning
      • Successful showing, 400 tickets were sold.  Kids had a great time.  Tallies/Profits TBD. 

 

Pavers & Blacktop – Lizz Giampaglia
      • Written in Stone working on engraving paver bricks; Path should be completed mid-late May.  Benaquista is currently excavating area for Blacktop; Drainage Grate has been raised; should be completed by end of month.
 Summer Acting Camp Program – Chona Freedman/Ann Van Cleave
      • Grease!  4 weeks planned for August/September.  Grades 3-8th.  Working on pricing and schedule.  See attached for details.  Carol Mucciolo makes motion to approve, Tara Conmy 2nds motion, All in favor, None opposed, Motion passes. 
Author Day – Annie Hausmann
      • Joyce McDonald went well and a great presenter.  The older grades seemed to get the most out of it.

 

PTO Meetings – Annie Hausmann 
      • Enough people have requested that the meeting be during the day as well as evening.  Wendy Ward makes motion to have every other month be during the day, Wendy Bajakian 2nds, All in Favor, None Opposed, Motion passes.
Escape School – Wendy Bajakian
      • Has been rescheduled for 5/6/08 at 7pm.

 

Walk-a-thon – Carol Mucciolo
      • $1,237.52 final check received.  $300.00 more received than last year.
School Social – Wendy Ward
      • Scheduled for 5/9/08 4pm.  K-6th 1.5 hr interevals.  Chaperones needed for dance and pick up times.  Set up volunteers needed.  Tara Conmy volunteers to Chair committee next year.  Wendy Pitlak volunteers to help Tara.

 

OLD BUSINESS

 

Social Studies Lab update requested.  17 computers needed  for 2/3 of 7th Grade and entire 8th grade lab (appros $18K).  Colleen Steele makes motion to earmark available funds in June for Lab request.  Wendy Ward 2nds; AIF; NO; Motion passes contingent on funds in June.
